Surah Yunus is the 10th chapter /surah of the holy Quran. It has 109 verses. This name Yunus has been given to this surah after the name of the prophet Yunus, may Allah be pleased with him.

 According to Tafseer e Quran, this surah is believed to have been revealed before the migration of the prophet Muhammed peace was upon him and his followers from Mecca to Medina. Therefore, it is known as a Meccan surah.

فَلَمَّاۤ اَلۡقَوۡا قَالَ مُوۡسٰى مَا جِئۡتُمۡ بِهِۙ السِّحۡرُ‌ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ سَيُبۡطِلُهٗ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُصۡلِحُ عَمَلَ الۡمُفۡسِدِيۡنَ‏ ﴿﴾۸۱

And when they had cast, Moses said: That which you have brought is magic. Look! Allah will make it vain. Indeed Allah upholdeth not the work of mischief-makers. 

Benefits of Surah Yunus

The importance of Surah Yunus is described in a narration by Imam Jafar as Sadiq. He says that the person who recites Surah Yunus will be placed along Muqarrabeen the people who are close to Allah on the Day of Judgement.

Another narration says that if a person recites Surah Yunus, his reward will be equal to the number of persons who were present in the qaum/ nation of Hazrat Yunus (AS).

Allah declares the authenticity of the Holy Quran by giving examples of the prophets and their people. It is mentioned in the Surah Yunus that the Quran is the only guide to follow the right path. Allah also says that heaven is for the believers and hell for the non-believers

What is the dua of Yunus?

The Dua of Prophet Yunus علیہ السلام is often recited by believers in the time of trials and distress.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

“There is none worthy of worship except You, Glory to You, Indeed, I have been of the transgressors.”

From Prophet Yunus’s story, we know that he left his place and abandoned his people in anger because they didn’t listen to him. Allah Almighty did not like this act. So the prophet made this dua and was removed from the belly of the whale by the grace of Allah.
